Theophylline causes loss of smooth muscle tone and dilation of the airways. It can promote the release of endogenous adrenaline and norepinephrine and relax airway smooth muscle. Inhibiting the release of calcium ions from the endoplasmic reticulum of smooth muscle and reducing the concentration of calcium ions in cells can cause airway dilation. Theophylline powder has a stronger relaxing effect on smooth muscle, but is not as strong as beta agonists.
